Are you applying for a Death Certificate for Property Mutation or Bank Claim? Losing a loved one is painful, and the legal paperwork that follows can be overwhelming. In West Bengal, a digital Death Certificate is the mandatory document for settling land disputes, claiming insurance, and closing bank accounts.
Previously, people had to visit the Municipality or BDO office multiple times. But in 2026, the West Bengal Government has digitized the entire process through the Janma Mrityu Tathya (CRS) Portal. Whether the death occurred at home or in a hospital, you can now apply online.
In this complete guide, we will show you how to apply for a WB Death Certificate Online 2026, track the status, and download the official PDF for legal use.
📢 Important Update 2026
Please note that the E-District portal no longer accepts Death Registration applications. All services have been shifted to the dedicated Janma Mrityu Tathya portal. You must use this new website to avoid application rejection.

🏥 Hospital Death vs. Home Death: The Process
The application method depends strictly on where the death occurred. Following the wrong process will lead to immediate rejection.
If the death happened in a Hospital/Health Center:
- ❌ DO NOT Apply Online: The hospital authorities will automatically send the data to the Municipality/BDO.
- ✅ What to do: Collect the “Medical Certificate of Cause of Death” from the doctor and wait 21 days to download the certificate online.
If the death happened at Home:
- ✅ MUST Apply Online: The next of kin (Son/Wife) must apply on the Janma Mrityu Tathya portal.
- 📄 Mandatory Proof: You must have the Cremation Certificate (Burial/Burning Ghat Receipt) and a Doctor’s Certificate.
✍️ How to Apply Online (For Home Death)
If the death occurred at home, follow these exact steps to register it legally. Ensure you have the deceased’s Aadhar/Voter card details.

✍️ Correction in Death Certificate
Mistakes in the deceased person’s Name, Age, or Address can cause issues in property mutation. You can apply for correction online.
- Minor Corrections: For spelling mistakes, apply online via “Citizen Services” > “Correction”. Upload the Cremation Receipt or Aadhar as proof.
- Major Corrections: Changing the full name or date of death requires an Affidavit from a First Class Magistrate. You must visit the BDO/Municipality office for this.
